Hair loss myths and facts

We’ve all heard the myths about hair loss. Many of them are just plain wrong, and we’re here to set the record straight.

Myth: You can prevent hair loss with a special shampoo.

Truth: Shampoos are designed to help clean your hair and scalp, not prevent hair loss. The ingredients in the shampoo may prevent dirt, grease, and other impurities from sticking to your hair. But they won’t stop you from losing hair.

Myth: You should wash your hair every day.

Truth: Washing your hair more than twice a week is not recommended by most experts because it can dry out your scalp, making it more prone to breakage. It’s best to stick with washing every two days, or even once a week if you have oily skin or dandruff issues. If you do wash more often, make sure that you use conditioner after washing to help keep your ends healthy and hydrated.

Myth: Hair loss is genetic.

Truth: It might be hereditary in some cases, but genetics alone don’t cause baldness. The most common cause of hair loss is an autoimmune disease called alopecia areata (AA), which attacks the hair follicles and causes them to fall out. 80% of people who suffer from AA have another autoimmune disorder at some point in their lives—and it can affect any part of your body (including your head). Other causes include thyroid problems or high levels of hormones like xenoestrogens in the environment.

Myth: You can’t stop hair loss

Truth: Yes, you can!

If you’re itching to know how to stop hair loss, you’re not alone. We’ve all seen those articles that say “the cause of your hair loss is genetic,” or “you’ll eventually lose the ability to grow hair on your head.” But what if we told you that this isn’t true? What if there are simple steps that anyone can take that will help prevent hair loss?

The answer is in the food you eat, the vitamins and supplements you take, and even the way you treat your scalp.
